C-DICE evaluation

A systematic evaluation of C-DICE outcomes (2021–2024)

Cover of C-DICE evaluation

This independent evaluation highlights the significant impact of C-DICE in supporting postdoctoral researchers. It explores how C-DICE approached long-standing challenges – such as limited career support, funding barriers, and systemic neglect – by offering transformative development opportunities.

The findings confirm the value of investing in this often-overlooked community and calls on universities, funders, and industry to build on C-DICE’s success.

Special thanks to the postdoctoral researchers whose invaluable contributions shaped this evaluation.

Between 2021 and 2024, C-DICE supported over 800 researchers across 18 UK institutions. This evaluation, conducted by Elizabeth Adams (Scafell Coaching Ltd) examines the programme’s impact on participants’ personal and professional development, as well as its influence on partner institutions and the wider UK research ecosystem. It also offers insights for future growth and improvement.

How the evaluation was conducted

The evaluation used a mixed-methods approach, including:

  • Document analysis
  • A survey of 44 participants
  • 17 interviews with researchers and stakeholders

It captures diverse perspectives and includes real-world examples to illustrate key outcomes and lessons learned.

Key outcomes

A pyramid diagram displaying the following outcomes: Top of pyramid: Results - New projects 57 outputs. Middle of pyramid: Action of change in behaviour = New collaborations & networks Bottom of pyramid: Learning = Knowledge & awareness of careers and energy transition
Figure 1: High-level overview of the different types of outcomes experienced by C-DICE participants (drawing loosely based on the Kirkpatrick evaluation ‘levels of learning’ model)

This diagram illustrates the layered impact of the C-DICE programme, progressing from foundational learning experiences to tangible behavioural changes and culminating in measurable results. It highlights how participants gain knowledge, build networks, and ultimately generate significant outputs such as funded projects and fellowships

Conclusions and recommendations

C-DICE has successfully empowered postdoctoral researchers through a blend of formal training, hands-on learning, and collaborative opportunities. Participants reported increased skills, confidence, and networks, with many applying these gains to advance their careers and research.

The programme’s innovative, inclusive approach – especially in areas like diversity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and flexible delivery – has made it a model for postdoc development. While challenges in industry engagement remain, our learning and legacy offer valuable insights for the wider research sector.

Diagram shows, in the centre: Participants – Career awareness, Individual career benefits, Research outputs. Next ring area outwards for Industry – Industry awareness of postdocs and desire to work with them, Broader outlook on net zero. Overlapping with outer ring – Wider sector through: Enhanced understanding of working with industry, Enhanced networks, Learning on postdoc development Embedding of EDI good practice Partnership potential
Figure 2: Benefits of C-DICE experienced by participants, industry partners and the wider sector

This diagram illustrates how the benefits of the C-DICE programme radiate outward—from individual postdoctoral researchers gaining career insights and research experience, to industry partners developing stronger collaborations and sustainability awareness, and finally to the wider sector, where inclusive practices, enhanced networks, and partnership opportunities are fostered.

Looking ahead

C-DICE funding is secured until the end of December 2025, and we will continue to deliver a full programme of activities through that time. During this period, we’re also focused on sharing best practices and maximising the impact of our work. Looking to the future, the C-DICE team is actively exploring opportunities to ensure long-term sustainability, including seeking additional funding.

If you have questions or are interested in partnering with C-DICE beyond 2025, we’d love to hear from you.
